Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep examination about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The story commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, weaving in bits of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes during something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and distant from his social circle. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they still love each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
