Israel Attacks Iran as Blasts Reported in the Capital
In the early hours of Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking Tehran, following statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two powerful explosions were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over central and eastern districts of the Iranian capital.
“The nature of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not immediately offer additional information.
Context: Rising Strains and Prior Events
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased tensions in the region. Major developments leading up to this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the region, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further discussions scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to prior accusations, Iranian authorities had accused the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports expected as events unfold.
