EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
